Lindsey and Archie go to Clinton County Courthouse in Carlyle Illinois

Lindsey brought Archie on a trip home for Thanksgiving. Archie met all of Lindsey's family members in the north suburbs of Chicago and ate a nice big Thanksgiving feast. The turkey was great of course but the best dish of all was her family's spinach and artichoke casserole. Archie stuffed his belly with it! After a long break of fun, games, and food Lindsey brought Archie on another long car ride home. They got stuck in traffic leaving the city for two hours with Lindsey's friend Sam so they listened to Disney CDs to pass the time. On their way south, Lindsey made a detour to Carlyle Illinois to see the St. Louis 250 cake outside Clinton County Courthouse. It was getting cold and dark out but it was worth the trip to see such an awesome cake. The cake was located at 850 Fairfax Street in Carlyle which is 38.611165 Latitude and -89.368342 Longitude. The courthouse is an important location for one of the cakes because Clinton County, organized in 1824, was named after DeWitt Clinton. He was the seventh governor of New York and he helped build the Erie Canal!

Archie and Lindsey traveled one mile from Wham to her apartment, to her parents house which was 356 miles, from there to the courthouse which was 299 miles and from the courthouse back to Lindsey's apartment which was another 69.1 miles. Since the apartment is a mile away from Wham, Archie has traveled a total of 7529.03 miles so far this year!

At the park we saw cows, mini horses, rabbits, chickens, pigs, and peacocks! Louie wanted to go on a pony ride, but he was too small to ride. Sadie and Archie see the Spirit of St. Louis Airport

Sadie took Archie on a trip home to Missouri.  We went to the Missouri high school state cross country meet to watch Sadie's little brother race in Jefferson City.  His team won! Marilou and Louie Snoop Through Lincoln's House!

On October 3rd, 2014, Marilou came up with the bright idea to visit Lincoln's house in Springfield! I know Abraham Lincoln as the sixteenth president.  Besides being our president, I had no clue he had a wife AND kids!!! Seeing his house gave me a new perspective on Abe Lincoln.  It was interesting to see how he lived his life. Lincoln and his wife had separate rooms and his two kids shared a bedroom. One thing I found interesting is in the upstairs hallway there were no decorations or pictures on the wall. This was because Lincoln's wife thought it was pointless to decorate spaces that will not be visible to guests.

We began our journey from the Wham building to Marilou's apartment, which was 0.6 miles.  From there we traveled to Springfield, IL to Abraham Lincoln's house, which was 169 miles. All in all, we traveled 339.2 miles round-trip!

Archie's First St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Game

On September 3rd Archie took a trip to St. Louis with Ashleigh and her twin sister Cassie. While they were there, Archie saw his first St. Louis Cardinals baseball game. After watching the Cards pull off a win in the bottom of the 9th inning, they took a different way home and stopped by two stl250 cakes. The first one was located at Emma Kunz House located at 602 Fulton St. Belleville, IL 62220. This house was built around 1830 and was named after the last resident of the house, Emma Kunz, who lived there for 77 years. The house is modeled after the 'German street homes' that were common in Europe.
After we left the old Kunz home we headed to Eckert's Belleville Country Store and restaurant to eat dinner. The second stl250 cake we visited is located at this little country store (951 S. Greenmount Belleville, IL 62220) We concluded our adventure with a tastey fried chicken dinner and a dessert from the Eckerts Country Store/Diner.

Stephanie and Archie go to Oregon

On October 9, 2014, Archie and Stephanie set off on an exciting adventure to visit Stephanie's boyfriend, Matt, in Beaverton, Oregon. The trip started off with a walk from the building Wham at SIUC to Stephanie's apartment. Then Archie and Stephanie drove to SIUE in Edwardsville, IL so Stephanie's sister could take us to the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport so we could finally start our journey to Oregon. Once we boarded our plane in St. Louis, we flew all the way to Seattle, WA. Once we were in Seattle, we had to wait for a small plane to take us to Portland International Airport where we would finally see Stephanie's boyfriend. Archie and Stephanie were exhausted after all that traveling! On October 11, Archie, Stephanie, and Matt went to Hillsboro, Oregon to visit the Roloff Farm from the TLC show, Little People, Big World! They were all so excited, but especially Stephanie and Archie! We took a tour of the Roloff's property and even got to meet the Roloffs! (Archie was a little shy, so he did not want his picture taken with Amy Roloff). After an exciting day at the farm, we decided to go see the house where the movie The Goonies was filmed! Although we could not go inside the house because someone lived there, we were able to get our picture taken in front of the house. We were so excited!! Our trip was not over yet but Archie was getting very tired from all the traveling and sight-seeing so he stayed inside until it was time to come back to Carbondale, IL.

Archie Travels to St. Louis!

On October 4, 2014, Archie traveled with Melissa and her mom, Sherri, to the beautiful city of St. Louis, MO.  Archie, Melissa, and Sherri traveled to St. Louis in search of the 250 cakes that were located throughout the city.  The drive to St. Louis was roughly a 3 hour drive and approximately 144 miles, from Melissa's house.
Once in St. Louis, Archie, Melissa, and Sherri went and found the cake at the Gateway Arch.  The Gateway Arch is now a monument for Thomas Jefferson and other pioneers that used St. Louis as, "The Gateway to the West."  After Archie was done with his photo-shoot at the Arch, Melissa and her mom decided to go up into the Arch for some sightseeing.  Archie was afraid of the elevator and the height, so he stayed in Melissa's purse until the Arch trip was over.  The Gateway Arch is located at 100 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, MO and has a latitude of 38.624953 and a longitude at -90.18429.
After the excitement of finding the cake at the Gateway Arch, the group decided to go find more!  The second cake they came across was the cake at the Old Post Office.  The Old Post Office is 1 of 5 U.S. Custom Houses built after the war in the fastest growing cities.  It is now, the only surviving building of these 5.  The Old Post Office can be found at 815 Olive Street St. Louis, MO and has a latitude of 38.6272733 and a longitude of -90.1978889.
The third cake found was at the MX Complex/Future home of the National Blues Museum coming in 2015.  The National Blues Museum is going to show examples of Blues music and how Blues influenced America.  The National Blues Museum can be found at 618 Washington St. Louis, MO and has a latitude of 38.6303 and a longitude of -90.1898.
The fourth and final cake found, was at the Lammert Building.  The Lammer Building was a furniture company founded in St. Louis.  The Lammert Building can be found at 911 Washington Street St. Louis, MO and has a latitude of 38.6311 and a longitude of -90.1933.

Archie, Melissa, and Sherri all had a great time in St. Louis finding the cakes and visiting their locations.  The three of them cannot wait until they can visit St. Louis again sometime soon to visit more interesting places.

The total miles roundtrip was 354 miles.  After that much traveling, all three individuals were exhausted!

Erin and Archie get their groove on!

During the first weekend of September, Erin and Archie journeyed with Erin's roommates, Nick and Drew, to go to a music festival called Mystik Santuary in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Erin's boyfriend, Logan, and Drew's best friend Tony also went on this journey.  They all left on the 5th of September bright an early for the nine hour drive to the fest; they drove for much of the day on the 5th.  It wasn't until about six o'clock that Erin, Drew, Nick, Logan, Tony, and Archie embarked on the first night of the festival which was located at Oklahoma City Air Park.  Here is a picture of Erin and Archie at the gates of the music festival:

Archie looks so small in Erin's hands compared to the huge sign outside!  The following day, September 6th, 2014, the group of friends went back to the Air Park for some more music and dancing.  Unfortunately, Archie was feeling a little to tired from the night before to make it out again.

Samantha travels home with Louie!

On the weekend of September 14th, Samantha brought me to her hometown to visit with her family.  I got to meet all of her friends and family; I especially enjoyed playing with her niece, A'rion!  On Sunday the 14th, before we traveled back to Carbondale, I went on an adventure with her family to Wildcat Den State Park, which is located in Muscatine, IA.  There, we played in the water and took a tour of the Pine Creek Mill.  This corn mill was built in 1850! There was a dam with a waterfall that Samantha used to swim in as a kid.  The dam was created for its water power to help power the corn mill and a few more like it, also located on Pine Creek.  I had a great weekend, but unfortunately traveled back to Carbondale THREE days too early to meet Samantha's new nephew!!  Her sister, Breezy, was hoping to pop when Samantha was in town, but baby Liam had other plans.

Taylor and Archie Visit St. Louis!

Taylor and I had a busy weekend in St. Louis!  Taylor and her parents were visiting family in Florissant, MO. and decided to visit some of the STL 250 cakes before coming home.  We first visited the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant, just a few minutes from Taylor's aunt's house.  The shrine is at the site of the first church built in the village of Florissant in 1789.  The church and convent are two of the oldest buildings in the St. Louis area, and William Clark (of Lewis & Clark) even attended weddings and baptisms there!  This can be found at latitude 38.796728 and longitude -90.334093.

Next, we traveled to Forest Park, where Taylor spent lots of time with her family over the years.  Our first stop was the Jewel Box, which houses beautiful floral shows.  The Jewel Box was built in 1936 by the City of St. Louis and is listed on the National Historic Register.  It is an example of outstanding greenhouse design with unconventional, cantilevered, vertical glass walls.  This can be found at latitude 38.632147 and longitude -90.279462.

We then visited the St. Louis Science Center.  The St. Louis Science Center is one of the top 20 science centers in the United States, welcoming more than 900,000 visitors annually.  The Science Center houses exhibits on dinosaurs, life science, and futuristic Cyberville among many others.  You can also watch movies in the Omnimax Theater which is displayed on the inside of the dome of the Science Center.  There's lots to do for all ages at the Science Center.  This can be found at latitude 38.628930 and longitude -90.270496.

We visited The Muny next.  The Muny has been in Forest Park since 1917, and was completed in only 49 days, excluding 7 days that rain made construction impossible.  Since its opening, the Muny has housed many events including plays, musicals, and concerts.  This can be found at latitude 38.641020 and longitude -90.280672.

After that we visited the St. Louis Art Museum.  The museum was originally located downtown but was moved to Forest Park after the 1904 World's Fair.  The building was constructed in 1902-1903 and was built as the main building of the Palace of Fine Arts for the World's Fair.  It houses many beautiful works of art.  This can be found at latitude 38.639503 and longitude -90.294529.

Last, we visited the St. Louis Zoo.   The St. Louis Zoo was voted #1 zoo b Zagat Survey's U.S. Family Travel Guide in associated with Parenting Magazine.  The birth of the zoo is credited by the 1904 World's Fair, which brought attention to St. Louis and Forest Park.  A walk-through bird cage was constructed for the World's Fair which was bought rather than be dismantled and returned to Washington, D.C.  In 1910 the Zoological Society of St. Louis was formed from people interested in opening a zoo.  The St. Louis Zoo houses more than 19,000 exotic animals of 655 species and 3 million people visit the zoo each year which makes it one of the top attended zoos in the nation.  This can be found at latitude 38.635193 and longitude -90.290712.
We had so much fun visited St. Louis, and I can't wait to visit again!

Taylor and I traveled a total of 316.7 miles roundtrip.  Adding the miles I traveled with Sydney to the Veteran's Memorial Wall, I've traveled 330.3 miles!

Shawna and Louie go to Six Flags!

On Sunday August 24th, Louie and I traveled to Six Flags in Eureka, Missouri! This Six Flags was one of the original three, and it had a cake in front of the fountain to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of St. Louis! The latitude was N 38.508 degrees and the longitude was W 90.679 degrees.  It took Louie and me 27.6 miles to travel from the Wham building to my home. From there, we went to Six Flags, which was 137 miles. Round-trip, Louie and I traveled 329.2 miles! We went on quite an adventure!

Archie & Sydney visit the Traveling Vietnam Wall

On September 11th Sydney and I went to see the Traveling Vietnam Wall in Carbondale. It was right on campus! We didn't make it to the opening ceremony because Sydney had too much homework. But when we did get there, I couldn't believe how big it was! It was almost as long as the practice field and this wall is only 80% of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. There weren't many people around but we talked to two very kind veterans. One of them even received a purple heart on his first tour in Vietnam and then went back a few years later to serve his country again! I couldn't believe the patriotism those veterans have. We also talked to a volunteer who told us that 162 out of the 58,3000 names on the wall are from Southern Illinois. Sydney told the volunteer that her grandpa was a Vietnam veteran as well, but he passed away 5 years ago because of cancer. Sydney told me she wants to teach her future students about this war because most people don't know about it and it is a part of our local history.

I can't wait to see what adventures I go on next!!! :)

Where oh where will our little dogs go?
Stay tuned and find out where  Louis and Archie  will travel
with the students in CI 362 during the  fall semester of 2014.
This semester we are celebrating the 250th anniversary of St. Louis. St. Louis is hosting a Cakeway to the West to help  commemorate this milestone.
Cakeway to the West is one part public art exhibit, one part scavenger hunt and one part history lesson - all adding up to a year's worth of fun exploring St. Louis!
Standing four-feet-tall, each two-tier ornamental birthday cake has been decorated by local artists and will mark a location of note in the St. Louis region.  200 of the locations were chosen by stl250 and 50 were selected through a public vote.”
See the site below for a list of  locations of the cakes in the St. Louis area.
